RIDI light management for more comfort and efficiency

Modern lighting technology ensures that the right light is available in the right quantity and at the required time.

Ideally the daylight cycle, which is stimulating for the human body, is integrated and used optimally. Modern technologies allow light control via apps, operating panels or programmable buttons, making light management highly convenient for users. Daylight sensors and motion detectors are used to significantly increase the efficiency of the lighting system without affecting visual comfort.

Light management creates individual light on demand, starting with breaking up the rigid pattern of “on or off”.

Light management is the intelligent controlling of light.

Intelligent light control with light management systems is becoming increasingly important for energy-efficient lighting.

The integration of RIDI light control systems, which operate lighting systems with daylight and/or motion control, significantly increases the efficiency of the system without affecting visual comfort.

Daylight sensors and motion sensors ensure best possible utilisation of daylight, dim the lighting according to demand or switch off the lighting system completely when no light is required. In a new system with LED luminaires, the combination of daylight sensing and motion control can save up to 85 % energy compared to old systems.

Light management systems can make lighting comfortable for users. Whether via smartphone app, operating panel or programmable button – the systems can be individually adapted to the wishes and requirements of the users.

Once saved, stored lighting scenarios for specific light atmospheres can be automatically executed throughout the day or called up with the press of a button through the electronic light control systems. This allows individual treatment of the different tasks in the room, e.g. meetings, conferences, presentations, general lighting or desk work.

Health & emotion

As we are learning more about the biological effect of light on the human body, it becomes increasingly important for the planning of lighting systems. Light is not only perceived visually but it also has an effect on the inner body clock, determining the sleep/wake rhythm as well as mental capacity. In reality, these two curves are not necessarily identical. This is where an active light management system can intervene and help users to achieve individual well-being. Biologically active lighting solutions are subject to the circadian dynamics, stimulating the respective receptors with high illumination levels during the day. During the evening and night, low illumination levels suppress this stimulation.

“Tunable White” and “Human Centric Lighting” are lighting solutions which take on these challenges. Their parameters determine whether the light has an activating or relaxing effect on the human organism.

Light management solutions are not only used for working and studying, however, but also to create emotions through mood lighting. The right illumination in shops or shopping malls can stimulate the urge to spend and turn shopping into an experience. The atmosphere in restaurants and hotels can be influenced in the same way to increase the guests' feeling of well-being. The use of light management is also very important in the health sector and in geriatric care.

Building management system

The digital DALI interface forms the basis for intelligent light management. The acronym stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. DALI is an independent system, but it can also be connected to building systems (BMS) through so-called gateways.

Connecting lighting, emergency lighting, blinds, heating, ventilation and other systems is already state of the art today. In future, the networking of “intelligent objects” (internet of things) will make an interface to the lighting system a necessity.
