2020-12-UK-Product-Madness-London
Product Madness, an award winning developer of social and mobile games, have occupied the 6th Floor of the listed 1 Finsbury Avenue building in the heart of London’s financial centre. They have turned the category A space, with the help of contractors Oktra, into an imaginative workspace comprising of 24 differentiated work zones and fulfilled their brief of delivering Passion, Creativity and Collaboration. All this in a traditional area of the City of London normally occupied by financial institutions. In 2019 the Category A fit-out of the entire building was lit with the RIDI LINIA system which is a product used for both industrial and commercial buildings. Supplied in black finish, the product looked both modern and technical for what is a completely stripped back exposed services space. The LINIA system was supplied with the MPS low-glare luminaire for office compliance and has an exceptional efficiency. RIDI supplied over 6000 luminaires onto its proprietary pre-wired trunking system. The system also fed the centrepiece atrium lighting that consisted of over 200 Spectral Finy’s to create a pixel effect at high level. LINIA came into its own for the various office Cat B fitouts, including Product Madness, due to its sheer flexibility. The luminaire modules are easily demounted and can be repositioned anywhere along the trunking with tool-less simplicity. Clearly feature and decorative lighting was introduced to the various areas in all fit-other areas but they all worked around the core LINIA product which proved to be the mainstay lighting for the working zones. LINIA also had the advantage in that it could also be used to power additional feature and decorative products – not just from RIDI Group. LINIA is a perfect product for Category A schemes and the finished results from Product Madness show just how effective the product line is.

New light in the greenhouse – flexible and efficient Grönfingers garden center in Rostock Lots of plants, lots of space, lots of daylight: garden centres place unique demands on lighting. The successful lighting retrofit at Grönfingers, the leading garden centre in the Rostock region, demonstrates how well a solution using the RIDI LINIA trunking system in combination with the APCON EASY BLE lighting control can meet these needs. From a cooperative nursery just outside Rostock, founder Rudolf Heinemann built a garden centre with its own production facility after German reunification. Today, the family-run company under the “Grönfingers” brand is considered one of the most versatile, modern, and sustainable players in the industry – even by European standards. The company boasts some 12,800 m² of sales space, with nearly the same amount again dedicated to in-house cultivation, administration, storage, and auxiliary buildings. Typical of garden centre is the greenhouse architecture made of steel and glass. The first 6,000 m² construction phase, completed last year, shows how such spaces can be illuminated in a modern, appealing, and efficient way. Grönfingers chose RIDI as their project partner – not least because of the manufacturer’s expertise in both lighting and control solutions. High potential for energy savings Natural daylight plays the main role at Grönfingers. “It offers the plants ideal conditions,” says Piet Heinemann, grandson of the founder, who works as Head of Internal Services and led the retrofit project. Thanks to the glass roofs, daylight is abundantly available – and doesn’t cost a cent. The task of artificial lighting is to supplement the natural light when the garden centre’s opening hours in winter extend into dusk or nighttime. Additionally, partly or fully covered roof areas create zones that require additional lighting during the day. “We were satisfied with the old lighting system for over 20 years,” explains Heinemann, “but replacement parts for the pendant fixtures and discharge lamps were becoming increasingly scarce” – in other words, the system had reached the end of its lifecycle. At just the right time, the local RIDI sales expert presented a compelling offer: a completely redesigned smart lighting solution based on RIDI LINIA LED trunking, promising higher light quality and flexibility as well as major energy savings. Trunking system solution For the Heinemann family, integrating lighting control was a matter of course: “Greenhouse growers have used regulated building technology for years to manage heating, ventilation, and shading.” With the switch to LED technology – which unlike the previous system allows continuous dimming from 0 to 100% – integrating a control solution was the logical next step, especially with a system as cost-effective as the combination of RIDI LINIA and APCON control. To achieve a similarly uniform light distribution with LED trunking as previously with individual fixtures, RIDI and Grönfingers developed a layout following the steel structure of the greenhouse roofs: continuous trunking along the eaves lines and shorter trunking segments with three LED modules each, arranged perpendicularly across the sales floor. Existing power connections could be reused in this layout. Thanks to silver coloured trunking rails and modules, the new lighting visually integrates with the galvanized steel roof structure. LED modules with a luminous flux of 8,100 lm at the eaves achieve illuminance levels of approx. 800 lx. Presentation areas for plants, garden furniture, tools, and accessories are equipped with modules delivering 14,050 lm, reaching illuminance levels between 1,000 and 1,500 lx. Symmetrical wide-beam LED optics are used. The warm white light colour (830 / 3000K) creates a pleasant and natural atmosphere during early and late opening hours when artificial lighting dominates. Improved colour rendering compared to the old discharge lamps enhances the effect. Smart: Hybrid control system For applications like Grönfingers, RIDI offers the APCON EASY BLE control system, specially developed for LINIA installations. Its great advantage: it combines wireless Bluetooth/Casambi-based control with reliable wired DALI communication wherever existing lines are already present – specifically in the 11-pole LINIA trunking system. RIDI VLMF hybrid boxes act as interfaces between wireless and DALI and are simply inserted into the trunking rails. The result is maximum flexibility in planning and configuration. At Grönfingers, the cross-arranged trunking lines with three modules each are grouped into synchronously controlled units with a shared Casambi address. Within each trunking line, the modules receive DALI broadcast commands, which simplifies maintenance: if a module is damaged, it can be replaced without any need for reconfiguration or reprogramming. The planners used a total of 39 VLMF hybrid boxes to control 529 LINIA modules. Tailored and adaptable To seamlessly coordinate artificial and natural light, eight sensor units are installed above the sales area in key locations. The combined APCON BLE sensors for luminance and motion are powered via the LINIA trunking profile but communicate wirelessly via Bluetooth with the control network. The flexibility of APCON becomes evident on the promotional area, where the layout frequently changes and lighting must adapt accordingly. Here, a special APCON Hybridbox 32 allows for individual, rather than broadcast, DALI control – each module has its own Casambi address. The APCON app makes it easy to flexibly and reversibly group trunking lines or individual modules as needed. This concept enables operators to tailor their lighting and control system to fit their specific needs and continuously adapt it over time. Piet Heinemann, himself a trained engineer, takes full advantage of this flexibility. “I used a floor plan of the halls as the background in the APCON app,” he says, offering an example of how system and interface were customized: “That makes the system intuitive and easy for colleagues to operate as well.” The system is also equipped with an internet gateway for remote control and monitoring. Alternatively, to the app's built-in scheduling function, a Casambi push-button interface connects the lighting to an existing building control signal to activate the system during opening hours. A cost-effective solution Piet Heinemann felt well supported by the RIDI team throughout the process – from planning and logistics to APCON training at the RIDI site in Zeuthen near Berlin. The lighting quality in the renovated area is excellent, customers feel comfortable, and the expected energy savings have been achieved. “Direct energy savings are difficult to quantify due to our highly individual load profile and other fluctuations in consumption. But the fixed electricity supply costs are now significantly lower thanks to a noticeably reduced peak load,” explains Heinemann. The hybrid control solution offers great flexibility during operation and for future modifications or expansions. With the control technology accounting for just 6% of the total lighting system cost, it is also extremely cost-effective – a factor that matters to Heinemann, since commercial thinking is just as crucial to the long-term success of Grönfingers as their ‘green thumb’.

Fully operational across the board In the Rosenhöhe helicopter hangar in Bielefeld, the RIDI LINIA LED trunking system ensures excellent visual comfort. Perfect organization is vital in air rescue operations. The requirements for the new lighting in the hangar for Christoph 13, the rescue helicopter stationed in Bielefeld-Brackwede, were correspondingly clear: light quality, efficiency, and reliability were the criteria with which the RIDI LINIA trunking system impressed both designers and users. Alarm for Christoph 13 – when the acoustic signal sounds at the air rescue centre in Bielefeld, every second counts. The doors of the helicopter hangar swing open and the bright orange-painted EC135 T2i helicopter glides out on a rail-guided platform. The crew grabs their gear and climbs into the cockpit. The turbines start, and scarcely two minutes after the alert, the civil protection helicopter lifts off and heads for its destination. Maintenance and care under artificial light A perfectly rehearsed routine: Christoph 13 takes off more than 1,000 times a year, with standby service lasting daily from sunrise to sunset. The quiet night hours are used for care and maintenance of the aircraft, making good lighting in the six-meter-high hangar essential. A case for a lighting retrofit with RIDI, as the old system had reached the end of its service life: its T8 lamps were now banned under fluorescent lamp regulations, and the light quality no longer met modern standards. Commissioned by the Bielefeld fire department, which operates the air rescue centre, Philipp Bals from the Sonepar branch in Bielefeld handled the planning of a new, modern lighting system in the hangar. “We based our approach on applicable standards and our experience from comparable workplaces, such as car repair shops,” says Philipp Bals. “With 750 lx illuminance at the working level, the new concept clearly exceeds both the old system and current normative requirements, creating optimal working conditions.” Light quality exceeds the norm As the appropriate technical solution, Bals chose the RIDI LINIA trunking system, installed in five rows suspended from the hall ceiling. Each trunking rail is equipped with six LED modules of type VLGFL. With luminous fluxes of 8,300 lm each and wide-beam light distribution, the 30 luminaires in total provide the required illumination. Thanks to the high luminous efficacy of 176.6 lm/W, energy consumption is reduced: the total connected load is just 1,410 W, equating to around 5.72 W/m². The high-quality linear optics of the LED trunking luminaires ensure excellent glare control (UGR

2021-07-DE-Pflanzen-Koelle-Unterhaching
With more than 200 years of success to look back on, Pflanzen-Kölle is a testament to adaptability and the ability to innovate. Over these two centuries, the family business developed from the original landscape and market gardener in Ulm into today’s full-experience garden centre with 13 locations and two of its own nurseries in Germany. RIDI Leuchten GmbH developed a suitable lighting concept for the garden centre in Unterhaching in addition to the branches in Berlin and Munich. The universally applicable BRITT light panel is used in many parts of the garden centre and offers particularly large-scale and homogenous illumination with its three-row lens arrays. The version on the lighting track can also be rotated by 90° and is especially useful in the retail sector. The TINO LED spotlight integrated into the track provides accentuated lighting. The modern LED spotlight impresses with its compact design and be individually adjusted thanks to a swivel-and-tilt fixture. The cooler outdoor areas are illuminated by the RIDI LINIA-FLAT continuous lighting system with VLG-FZ gear tray. The optical control is directed via lens arrays made of UV-stabilised PMMA. Equipped with modern mid-power LEDs, the RIDI LINIA continuous lighting system boasts particularly high efficiency.

Germany
Messe München has 18 exhibition halls whose lighting will be completely refurbished over the coming years until the end of 2026. Our new RIDI LINIA continuous lighting system will be used for this and the first 4 halls have already been successfully refurbished. Short conversion times, a long service life and a halving of energy consumption are extremely important for the operator - because once all 18 halls have been equipped with LEDs, the annual electricity savings will total around 1.5 million kilowatt hours (kWh).

Intersport Rebi, founded in 1941 in Bitz, is one of the oldest sports shops in southern Germany. The company offers a varied selection of sports and leisure articles on two floors, which are divided into different areas. The RIDI LINIA continuous-row lighting system is used to illuminate the walkways, while the CIRQUA spotlight was specially developed to illuminate the products. The VLDF-F LED strip is used in the extensive bicycle department on the ground floor, including the workshop. Switching from conventional luminaires to an LED solution will save more than half of the electricity costs in future.

2016-12-DE-Stammherr-GmbH-Druckweiterverarbeitung-Waiblingen
Stammherr in Waiblingen is one of the region's most innovative folding specialists, offering numerous possibilities for processing printed products on a space of 1.100 square metres in total. To provide optimum illumination in the large production hall, the company opted for the flexible RIDI LINIA-FLAT luminous beam system. Linear lenses for wide-angled light dispersion and the transverse prismatic disk made of PMMA that reduces glare in the longitudinal direction guarantee optimum lighting conditions at the individual working areas. No additional reflectors are required to control the light, thus enabling an extremely flat and slim configuration. A clear sheet can also be pushed in for easy removal of dirt deposits on the underside. Planning: INNOBLICK GmbH & Co KG

Real Markt Balingen in the Gehrn business park became a Markthalle and celebrated a major re-opening in July 2019. Following Krefeld and Braunschweig, Balingen is the third location following this concept, which evokes an image of a traditional market hall with its world of gastronomical experiences and numerous small stands. The individual areas are highlighted using lighting by RIDI. In the entrance area and the primary traffic paths, the RIDI LINIA-FLAT continuous lighting system provides basic illumination and guides the visitor towards the individual shopping areas. The special arrangement of the continuous lighting systems in the style of Mikado sticks brings a loosening effect in the main corridors. CIRQUA spotlights in single and double variants are used to provide lighting accents for cosmetics, household goods and promotional products. REY aisle zone spotlights, also in single and double variants specially developed for the complex requirements of product lightning in shelf aisles, provide efficient illumination of the product aisles and wall displays. In the cooled and frozen food sections, VLDF-F continuous luminaires at a cool 5000 Kelvin are used to visually separate it from the other areas of the market with a colour temperature of 3000 Kelvin, simplifying orientation inside the spacious market.

2019-04-DE-Stadion-Alte-Försterei-Union-Berlin
The ‘An der Alten Försterei’ stadium is located in the neighbourhood of Köpenick to the south-east of Berlin, and has been home to 1. FC Union Berlin since its inauguration in 1920. With a current capacity of 22,012 spectators (as of 2019), it is the largest purpose-built football stadium in the capital. 1. FC Union Berlin made it to the first tier of the Bundesliga for the first time in its history in the 2018/2019 season. After the entire grandstand was fitted with conventional RIDI luminaires, the stadium built on its good cooperative relationship with the company in 2019 and decided to equip the ‘Schlosserei’ event area with modern LED lighting. The premises offer space for up to 1,000 guests across an area of 1,300 m² and provide direct access to the VIP stand. An efficient lighting concept that allowed for the premises to be set to different lighting moods was requested. The sleek RIDI LINIA-FLAT continuous lighting system in combination with spotlights from the TANGO series was the solution supplied to this end. The spotlights are integrated in the lighting track modules of the continuous lighting system and set eye-catching accents. The system is dimmable and features RGB colour control alongside white channels, which facilitates an impressive lighting set-up. The buffet areas are illuminated using the LUPO LED spotlight. Square recessed luminaires from the EBRE series, whose opal acrylic panels were decorated with the club’s logo on request, are used in the press area.

2017-11-DE-Schwelhalle-Balingen
The Schwelhalle (carbonisation hall) located in the Frommern district of the German town of Balingen looks back on a long history. The hall was originally built to serve as a site where slate was carbonised in ovens to derive oil. Alongside fuel, heating oil, bitumen, paraffin, synthetic resin, paints and lacquers were produced here until 1949. After that time, the hall served as a production or storage hall for various companies. In 2017, the advertising agency Atelier Türke, based in the Weilstetten district of Balingen, breathed new life into this old brick building. A striking glass cube constructed in the centre of the hall serves as a location for company events, workshops and similar. The hall has an floor space of 1,065 m² and a 17 m ceiling; the glass cube has a floor space of 208 m² and a height of 3.60 m. The black RIDI LINIA LED lighting system is the perfect match for the lacquered-black supports of the glass cube. Its pared-down, sleek design complements the cube’s minimalist architecture and makes it easy to gaze out into the hall from within. A diffuser made of PMMA with a satin finish serves as an optical controller, providing diffuse light distribution with a slight indirect component. Since they are equipped with RIDI Smart Control and a Tunable White function, the luminaires can be controlled via tablet: Users can easily carry out smooth dimming and control the colour temperature (within a range of 2700 to 6500 Kelvin) through an app.
